There’s Never Enough Time…

It’s 9:30 on a Wednesday night (which kinda sounds like the start of a Billy Joel song…), and my wife and I convene in the living room as we typically do at that time after all of the day’s activities have been tended to. Let’s take a look back at our day…

Our Typical Day

We’ve both gotten up at about 6 AM, gotten ourselves ready for work, gotten our two kids up, dressed, fed breakfast, packed and shipped off to school. I go to work. She goes to work. We both put in full days at the day job.

She grabs the kids from after school and heads home to start (or order) dinner around 5:30. I shuffle through my commute to get home around 6 PM. We have dinner as a family. We spend time with our kids, seeing how their days were, what they liked, what they didn’t like, what they could have done better for next time. Then all of a sudden, it’s time for the kids to get ready for bed.

Time for Bed

Their bedtime routine takes us to about 8:30 or so. We take a few minutes to ourselves, spending time on our respective interests – she with her blogging and podcasting (#shamelessplug – check her out at, and I with my woodworking (or sometimes, just making a mess in the shop). Which now takes us back to the living room at about 9:30…

We both plop down on the couch and we look at each other. We exchange hellos as if it’s the first time we’ve seen each other as husband and wife since the previous night at around the same time.

What’s Up Next?

“What do we have coming up this weekend and into next week?” I ask my wonderful wife and sidekick in this crazy thing called life.

Sometimes the kids have enough time to help out in the shop!
Every now and then, the kids come out into the shop to help

She responds with, “Let’s see. Tomorrow afternoon is Tae Kwon Do. Friday night is the art fair at school. Saturday, we have a birthday party in the morning, and one in the afternoon. Then we’re going to the game Saturday night. Sunday is brunch for my birthday. (Yep! Her birthday is coming up on May 9th. She loves presents and cards!) We MIGHT have some free time Sunday afternoon. Then Monday is soccer practice. Tuesday is Tae Kwon Do. Wednesday night is soccer game. Thursday is Tae Kwon Do (and her birthday!! Don’t forget that!!). Friday night is soccer game….”

I try to interject as my head spins like a little plastic toy top, “Woah! Ok… So, let’s start with tonight… How are you??”

Take a Deep Breath!

As life speeds up, how do you try to slow it down? With social media and DVR and everything On Demand and internet access at our fingertips nearly 24 hours a day, how are you supposed to keep up? I think that’s where your THING comes in. My thing is woodworking. Making… DIYing… Problem-solving… Error fixing… When there’s time for it of course!
